As the weather gets hotter and the sun more intense, your skin is under new stress. Hot weather can cause dehydration, over-oiliness, sunburns, and breakouts. To ensure that you take care of your skin and maintain its glow throughout the summer, Dr. Disha Jaggi, a top skin and hair expert, reveals her top professional tips for taking care of your skin in hot weather.
1. Hydration is Key
Dr. Disha stresses the need to stay hydrated from the inside out. Drink lots of water during the day to remove toxins and keep your skin full and clear. Apply a light, hydrating moisturizer with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin to balance moisture.
2. Don't Skip Sunscreen
One of the most important steps in summer skincare is applying sunscreen. Select a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or greater, and apply 20 minutes prior to going out. Reapply every 2–3 hours if you're outside. Sunscreen not only prevents sunburn but also helps avoid premature aging and skin cancers.
3. Cleanse Twice Daily
Increased sweating and oil production can clog your pores during hot weather. Use a gentle, foaming cleanser twice a day to remove dirt, sweat, and makeup without stripping your skin’s natural oils.
4. Go Light With Makeup
Heavy makeup can block your pores and worsen breakouts in the heat. Dr. Disha recommends switching to lightweight, non-comedogenic products or going makeup-free whenever possible to let your skin breathe.
5. Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and keeps your skin silky and radiant. But be careful not to over-exfoliate, which can dry out and irritate your skin, particularly during summer. Exfoliate just 1–2 times a week with a gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant containing AHAs or BHAs.
6. Apply Antioxidants
Hot weather and exposure to UV rays can lead to oxidative stress in the skin. Applying products containing antioxidants such as Vitamin C will protect the skin from environmental damage and stimulate collagen production for healthy glow.
7. Prevent and Treat Breakouts
Sweat and humidity can cause breakouts. Apply oil-free, acne-fighting products with salicylic acid or niacinamide. Do not forget to wash your face after sweating so that pores don't get clogged.
8. Keep Skin Cool
To calm down sun-tanned skin, Dr. Disha recommends the use of soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, cucumber gel or rose water. Chill your toner or face spray for a cool pick-me-up throughout the day.
9. Protect Your Lips and Eyes
Your lips and the sensitive skin around your eyes are also susceptible to sun damage. Apply soothing lip balm with SPF and sunglasses that have UV protection while indoors or when going outside.
10. Consume Skin-Friendly Foods
A healthy diet with seasonal fruits, leafy greens, and omega-3 rich foods can help promote skin health. Dr. Disha recommends cutting down on sugar and processed foods that can cause inflammation and breakouts.
